The House of St Barnabas and BUG are excited to announce the next discussion in the 37 Things You need to Know about Modern Britain series.

Long hours, low pay, endless emails, sexist bosses, stupid meetings, management-speak... when did modern work become quite so awful? Modern workplaces are
meant to be creative and fulfilling places, but in reality are we just working longer hours than ever for less pay?

??A recent study by the Office for National Statistic ? reported that a record number of ?us have now ditched the 9-5 to work for ourselves, but according to data released by ?HM Revenue and Customers, 80 per cent of the self-employed are actually living in ?poverty. So does the dream of flexible working bring its own nightmares?

To explore what we can do to make work better join Lucy Kellaway, Associate Editor and management columnist at the Financial Times, Robert Kelsey, best-selling author of What’s Stopping You, and leadership expert Gareth Coombs, in a debate chaired by author and cultural commentator, Stephen Armstrong, who writes for the Sunday Times, Wallpaper and Monocle.

This will be the 18th event in the ongoing series, 37 Things You Need To Know About Modern Britain, which is a partnership between BUG and The House of St Barnabas, forged from a mutual desire to affect positive social change by asking provocative, open-ended questions about life as we live it today.
