In this exhibition, several famous Kyoto tea houses will be introduced through photographs, architectural diagrams and other forms, to convey an understanding of key concepts such as wabi-sabi. This exhibition will give the viewer a feel for the Zen-influenced culture surrounding the Kyoto tea house, and highlight the history of the renowned Uji tea growing region south of Kyoto.

The ‘Kian’ teahouse will also be on display, a simple bamboo construction which through its incompleteness demonstrates the beauty and philosopy underlying the Kyoto tea house.

Japan’s leading calligrapher Tomoko Kawao will offer a calligraphy demonstration during the private view.

The exhibition is curated by Spin180 and it has been made possible with the kind assistance of Kyoto Prefectural Authority and Daitokuji Temple.
