Originally commissioned for the RSC'S first season in 1961, John Whiting's dramatization of Aldous Huxley's historical novel "The Devils od Loudun" was itself later adapted by Ken Russell into one of the most shocking and controversial films of the 1970's.
This staging, by the team behind 2015's "The Suicide" and last year's "Mary Stuart" at Central, rediscovers for the 21st Century the play's steely focus on perennial and troubling questions, of the reality of evil and of our collusion with it.
