The exhibition GESTURE - to touch the untouchable is the world premiere of a new art form exploiting the sense of touch for experiencing a painting. The series of sculptures re-acquaint audiences’ awareness of tactility (haptic perception) and places people with and without sight loss on an equal platform.
The show is the product of two years of work on the Haption Project, which was shortlisted for the 2016 Deutsche Bank (DBACE) award: It literally puts paintings under the microscope and exposes the hidden detail of Old Master’s by producing magnified tactile images.
The exhibition charts the change in techniques over 300 years from Giotto to Rembrandt and each sculpture strategically captures the idiosyncratic gestures of the artist’s brush and allows the observer, for the first time, to touch the strokes of a maestro.
The free exhibition, has been specifically designed to coincide with the World Para Athletic and IAAF World Championships, and takes place in the magnificent Stadium Suite, 3rd floor, John Lewis Stratford City with a panoramic view over the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park between 4 - 7 August.
