Some 15 years after the end of the East Africa campaign, the Historical Branch of the Committee of Imperial Defence produced drafts of an official history. British Army officers were invited to comment on these and to reflect on their own experiences. The responses, kept at The National Archives, provide a uniquely personal view of a harrowing campaign. In this talk, Dr Daniel Gilfoyle will reflect on these letters and consider the nature of the official history.
