Layers of Self

British artist Mark Dziewulski will debut a new series of paintings and sculptures at Gallery Different, London from 25th April - 1st May 2018. This work was inaugurated at the Biennale di Venezia 2017, where he exhibited alongside Julian Schnabel, Jeff Koons and Yoko Ono.

Dziewulski was inspired to create this new series of work when his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He decided to capture the essence of people’s characters, introducing the element of memory, movement and time.

His work reflects the positive aspects of what it means to be human and to celebrate people’s personalities. While working in his studio in San Francisco he would spend hours a day video conferencing with his mother in England. The communication was not just verbal or visual.

While he worked, he kept her company and they felt each other’s presence without talking. That presence of a person is what is captured in this work. The moving, flickering and distorted image is reflected in the paintings.
