New West End Theatre To Open…in A Car

A unique West End theatre is opening this summer…one that’s on four wheels. Indeed, London’s famed theatre district will soon be home to a play that takes place entirely in a car - with the cast sitting in the front seats and the audience in the back seats.

The unique play in a car has been commissioned by car insurers MORE TH>N and was written by Laurence Olivier award-winning playwright and screenwriter Bola Agbaje, famed for her first play ‘Gone Too Far’.

Entitled ‘Papa Don’t Preach’, the short 20-minute play takes place entirely in a family car parked up on London’s iconic Drury Lane. It aims to shine a light on the positive and important family conversations that can take place in a car.

The heartwarming, relatable and at times funny story of a father and daughter conversing in a car explores how the decisions of the past can affect the choices young people make, as well as the desires young people have to be independent and the conflict it causes for parents.

The play sees daughter Laura, 24 (played by professional actress Lekhani Chirwa) and her embarrassing but fun-loving dad David, 50 (played by professional actor Tony Timberlake) waiting outside a new flat for an estate agent and discussing their thoughts and feelings about Laura flying the nest. As they wait, we learn that the two are getting to know each other as they have a conversation about growing older and being independent.

Theatregoers will be shown to their seats in the back of the car, before the cast appears on the stage (the front seats) making this car possibly the smallest theatre in the world, holding a maximum audience of up to five people per performance. Audience members will have the chance to meet and speak to the cast in the car once the play has run.
