In 1967 the Dutch Brenninkmeijer brothers, John (piano), Chris (bass) and Stephen (drums) did what many teenagers did at that time and formed a band, Appleton, with guitarist Harry Terkowski joining them in 1969. By 1971 the band had broken up, but fast forward 25 years to 1996 and Appleton, with essentially the same members, was reborn. In 1998 they added a three-horn brass section, with two of those three original horn section players still performing with the band today. The music, which was originally a youthful rock and pop mix, has now matured into a much more sophisticated Jazz/Groove style and with the relatively recent addition of singers Caroll Vanwelden and Barbara Drennan the transmutation of Appleton in to a sophisticated jazz-influenced groove-orientated band was complete. This evening this Dutch/German band will be appearing at the Club for the second time with its latest programme dedicated to perhaps the greatest pop icons of all time, the Beatles. With refined and improvised jazz arrangements centred around its three-piece horn section and Belgian singer Caroll Vanwelden, the band presents its very own selection of Beatles classics. Groove and beat are celebrated, as are jazz, funk and soul, and all in a musical language that is very much the band's own. The line up of this 8-piece band for tonight's performance is the classic Appleton personnel of Caroll Vanwelden-vocals, Chris Perschke-trombone, Andreas Pompe-sax/flute, Thomas Siffling-trumpet/flugel, Harry Terkowsky-guitar, John Brenninkmeijer-piano, Chris Brenninkmeijer-bass and Stephen Brenninkmeijer-drums. This promises to be a fun evening of wonderful songs, led by an excellent singer backed by musicians of quality and taste.
