A night that boasts three events for the price of one, City of London Sinfonia’s ’Absolute Bird’ series finale brings birdsong-inspired, modern-day classical music and a late-night improvised set with folksinger Sam Lee and vocalist Alice Zawadzki to the Queen Elizabeth Hall. RSPB president Miranda Krestovnikoff also joins them for fascinating “bird talk” before the performance.
‘Translating Nature’ features 20th- and 21st-century music by composers who have painstakingly translated, or even transcribed, birdsong and nature sounds into works of art for chamber orchestra. These composers include Respighi (‘The Birds’), Messiaen (‘Le Merle Bleu’, ‘L’Alouette Calandrelle’) and, more recently, John Luther Adams ('Songbirdsongs'). You can also hear Vaughan Williams’ popular ‘Lark Ascending’ in all its pastoral glory.
