EUNIC AI Science Café: AI & Smart Mobility

Efficient and sustainable mobility is one of the imperatives for our future cities development. Connected vehicles and autonomous drones are already making their way to our streets. How can AI make cities safer and more sustainable? What future smart mobility patterns will look like?

The talk invites you to learn more about the future of smart mobility and its implications with Laura Ruotsalainen from University of Helsinki, Michal Čáp from MIT spin-off isee AI and Zsolt Szalay from Budapest University of Technology. The virtual event will be chaired by Michael Keith, Director of COMPAS at the University of Oxford.The AI Science Cafe is organized in collaboration with Finnish Institute, Hungarian Cultural Centre and Czech Centre.

Professor Michael Keith is Director of the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society at the (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford, co-ordinator of Urban Transformations (The ESRC portfolio of investments and research on cities), co-Director of the University of Oxford Future of Cities network and the Director of the PEAK Urban Research programme, a global network of cities research in China, India, Colombia and South Africa. Speakers:

Dr Laura Ruotsalainen is an Associate Professor of Spatiotemporal Data Analysis for Sustainability Science at the Department of ComputerScience at the University of Helsinki. The current research interests of the Spatiotemporal DataAnalysis research group lead by Ruotsalainen include the development of computer visionand machine learning algorithms for forming and analyzing accurate and reliable spatiotemporaldata for the development of sustainable smart cities. The research addresses especially sustainable mobility solutions, such as autonomous traffic.

Dr Michal Čáp is a Technical Lead in isee AI, an MIT spin-off company developing self-driving technology, and a research associate in the Artificial Intelligence Centre at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He has studied information technology, agent technology and artificial intelligence and worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA and the Department of Cognitive Robotics, TU Delft, Netherlands. Motivated by the arrival of self-driving taxi companies, he recently became interested in the analysis of transportation systems that employ large fleets of self-driving cars.

Dr Zsolt Szalay received the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), Hungary, in 1995, the M.Sc. degree in business administration from Corvinus University, in 1997, and the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from BME, in 2002. He is currently an Associate Professor and the Head of the Department of Automotive Technologies, Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He also acts as the Head of Research and Innovation with ZalaZONE Automotive Proving Ground, the unique Hungarian infrastructure for connected and automated vehicle testing. His research interests include advanced automotive technologies related to the testing and validation of highly automated and autonomous vehicles. He is a committed supporter of young talents from an early age as a Children’s University lecturer and via the BME Automated Drive Lab.
