Live from Haarlem: Mass for the Endangered - Pride of place in this programme goes to Sarah Kirkland Snider’s full length work Mass for the Endangered for chamber choir and ensemble. This is the Dutch première. The piece was commissioned by New York’s Choir of Trinity Wall St (conductor Julian Wachner) and takes the form of a requiem for all species threatened with extinction. The writer and illustrator Nathaniel Bellows (a frequent collaborator of Kirkland Snider’s) adapted the conventional mass texts to convey the ecological urgency inspiring the composition, and some of his evocative illustrations will be used during the performance. The Doelen Ensemble accompanies Cappella Amsterdam for this work, again in the magnificent ambience of Haarlem’s old Sint Bavokerk. To finish the programme, all three choirs perform Clytus Gottwald’s iconic 16-part arrangement of Mahler’s Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen from the Rückert Lieder.
