Decisions, inevitably, have consequences. For better or for worse, predictable or curve ball. After all, it is impossible to have total control, but not everything is outside our realm of accountability. Human behaviour is rarely innocent. When we consider some of the more horrific consequences that we know about –environmental destruction, class disparity and exploitation – these are circumstances that require analysis and critique. This last year, the consecutive lockdowns have given us more than ever time to reflect in our own behaviour, impact on society and the environment. The selection of paintings explore consequences from an intimate, domestic, politic, and holistic perspective, portraying images related to our everyday lives. Some domestic images might resonate with our own experiences during lockdown, whereas other landscapes representation might remind us the climate crisis we are yet to face. Therefore, the consequences of circumstance, theory aside, indicates the work that is yet to be done, the reparations that are yet to begin. ‘Consequences of Circumstance’ will be exhibiting work by the following Irish artists:

Paul Doran’s abstract paintings reflect on the environmental crisis and the different social challenges we face. Jenna Harison brings us to her own intimate romantic experiences impacted by actions that might seem unnoticed. Brian Ballard studies the circumstances of everyday life through colour and texture. Lisa Ballard will have on display a selection of paintings that depict Iceland’s changing landscape. Ruairi Fallon explores socio-political themes through personal and collective memory, depicting housing and the domestic, among others.

A ‘circumstance’ is no easy thing to grasp – and yet without trying to grasp, we are complicit in the consequences. Reflecting on the artists who are included in the exhibition, we are thankful that their art grants us space for reflection, observation, for grasping at the uncertain. As Seamus Heany writes, ‘The soul exceeds its circumstances’, and the poet’s words ring true, as does the artist’s eye – for the way that we may hope to exceed our limitations, dispute our confines, repair our pasts.

We warmly invite you to visit Zari Gallery to experience Consequences of Circumstances.
