This February BSMT will be opening the long-awaited solo show ‘Abstract Figurativism: Loving Fiercely’ by Ben Wakeling. A space where Abstraction and classic Portraiture collide, the inner workings of his world are beautifully transmuted onto canvas, exploring and re-inventing the concept of self-portraiture. He lets his hands draw in an automated way, reminiscent of the surrealist exercise of revealing inner consciousness through automatic writing. However, what Wakeling expresses is his identity in self-portraiture, suppressing conscious control in the process.

As an Artist in Residence of the North London Trust NHS Arts Programme (that he helped to create) he collaborates with patients experiencing episodes of mania or psychosis. Wakeling encourages them to channel the energy of these moments into art, regardless of the format. This is the ethos of Wakeling’s work, showcasing his personal struggles with bipolar disorder and making his practice truly unique. His work takes us on an inward journey, prompting us to question how we perceive ourselves beyond our physical form.

This all-encompassing exhibition will feature a collection of eight large-format paintings alongside a selection of never seen before drawings.
