Kinoteka The 22nd Polish Film Festival comes to Watermans with the screening of the new film Scarborn (Kos). This special edition of KINO! our Polish film talks, brings a new film that was a huge hit in Poland. It won multiple awards at the Gdynia Film Festival 2023 including the Golden Lion, Press Award and Youth Jury Award for Best Feature. The action drama, based on real events is a black comedy with echoes of Tarantino.
It follows the story of General Tadeusz "Kos" Kościuszko (Jacek Braciak) who returns to Poland in 1794 and plans to start an uprising against the Russians. He is accompanied by his faithful friend and ex slave Domingo (Jason Mitchell) and chased by Russian cavalry captain Dunin (Robert Więckiewicz) who is determined to foil his plans.
Film Talk - This screening will be introduced by Michael Brooke, a freelance writer specialising in central/eastern European cinema. Before the screening, he’ll be giving an extensively illustrated talk about the history of Polish black comedy, a particularly fertile seam given the national fondness for fatalism and sarcasm. Examples will include Andrzej Munk’s historical satires, Piotr Szulkin’s dystopian nightmares, Tomasz Konecki and Andrzej Saramonowicz's portraits of the modern Polish male, a cartoon hedgehog named Jerzy – and Paweł Maślona’s debut Panic Attack.
