"A Russian Christmas" Art Exhibition by Yuri Gorbachev

A major art exhibition by Russian artist
Yuri Gorbachev will take place at the prestigious Mayfair Levent Gallery in November 2005.

Inspired by the brilliant jewelled colours of Byzantine art and by the works of Fabergé, the charismatic Russian artist Yuri Gorbachev creates colourful, richly textured canvases saturated with oil and gold that are widely collected and exhibited in galleries and in more than twenty museums worldwide. Gorbachev emigrated to the United States in 1991, but much of his artistic world reflects joyful memories of his boyhood in a rural village near Novgorod, Russia - a radiant kaleidoscope of folk celebrations, street fairs, circuses, still lifes, and snowy winter landscapes.

Gorbachev, a relative of the former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, trained as a ceramic artist and philosopher, practiced journalism while attending university, and established a distinguished career as a ceramist and painter in the Soviet Union. At the age of 27, Yuri Gorbachev became a member of the prestigious Union of Artists, an honour reserved for the U.S.S.R.'s most revered cultural figures. Since moving to New York, the artist's whimsical paintings have illustrated Absolut and Stolichnaya vodka advertisements in hundreds of magazines around the world, and he has held dozens of solo exhibitions at galleries in the United States, Europe, Indonesia, and the Far East. In 1996, the United Nations commissioned an original work from Gorbachev for its "Endangered Species" stamp.

Yuri Gorbachev’s "Russian Christmas” exhibition at The Levent Gallery will run between 4th November and 2nd December 05 and will include a selection of paintings exhibited at The Moscow Museum of Modern Art, The Russian Museum of Kiev and the Rudana Museum Bali.
