Nude and Bird Studies by Edd Pearman To Launch Mark Jason Gallery In West London

Mark Jason Gallery, the London gallery committed to developing the careers of the best young graduates into successful artists, presents Nude and Bird Studies by the Unscene New Artist Award-nominee Edd Pearman from Monday 5th December to Friday 23rd December 2005 – launching the new Mark Jason Gallery space at 1 Bell Street, London, NW1.

Edd Pearman – Nude and Bird Studies

The Edd Pearman Nude Studies are 14 screenprints (4 on acrylic, 10 on paper) featuring images of individual male and female nudes. A logical continuation of the critically acclaimed Social Studies exhibition of 2003, the underlying themes of isolation and discomfort present in the former show – like the models – are revealed in their troubling, yet beautiful entirety. According to the artist, “the images are neither eroticism nor life study” – Pearman perhaps keen to avoid assisting in any straightforward categorisation of his work, conscious of the fact that the dozens of City figures who fought to buy Social Studies, did so for entirely different reasons to the Art establishment, who originally exhibited him as part of the New Contemporaries Show at The Barbican in 2002.

The Edd Pearman Bird Studies are 5 screenprints (on acrylic) depicting vibrantly coloured exotic birds, the sources for the images drawn from the pages of ornithology books that were the artist’s passion as a child. According to Pearman, the project is an “experiment in colour…an attempt to depict paradise.”

Edd Pearman – Background

Edd Pearman is no stranger to recognition from the arts fraternity and general public. Since his graduation with a MA from the Royal College of Art in 2002, and launch of the Social Studies series (depicting in screenprints suited young urbanites in contortions of despair or loneliness), Pearman has exhibited in galleries across the UK, New York and Japan. While mainly showing in private galleries, the work of Edd Pearman has appeared in group exhibitions at major art fairs such as The London Art Fair in 2003-4 and 2005. Nude and Bird Studies at Mark Jason Gallery is the second solo show by Pearman.

The son of a taxi-driver, Edd Pearman was born in Aldershot in 1976, and schooled in Farnham. Pearman’s move into art as a child was initially born from a necessity which uncovered a talent that developed into a passion which shaped the course of his career: “As I suffered from dyslexia as a child, art…the use of colour and shapes…provided me with an opportunity for self-expression which would otherwise have been denied.” Pearman’s unique interpretation of the screenprint medium has seen him transfer a keen awareness of colour and form, from the classroom of his youth and into the collections of the V&A, JFK Airport, The Bank Of America, and Ivan Massow.

Keen to maintain a connection with the academic environment, Edd Pearman is a visiting tutor at numerous colleges across the UK, including Wimbledon School of Art.

Mark Jason Gallery – A New Gallery Space in West London

Edd Pearman’s show at the Mark Jason Gallery will be the very first show in the new space at 1 Bell Street, London NW1. The move from the former premises at Bond Street, which saw the launch of the careers of highly successful artists including Sumiko Seki and Ed Hodgkinson, was prompted by the burgeoning popularity of the gallery’s artists, and a corresponding need to locate to a larger space in which to feature their growing body of work.

The new Mark Jason Gallery is 140m², and located within sight of the veteran YBA Lisson Gallery.

Mark Jason Gallery – History of Championing New Artistic Talent

Since its launch in 2001, the Mark Jason Gallery has been dedicated to the fostering, and development, of young art graduates into successful Contemporary British and International artists. Owned and curated by 35 year old Mark Jason – for ten years a key figure with the Contemporary Art division at Christies, and his wife Kate (previously Lady Clerk to The Master Of The Household at Buckingham Palace and likewise formerly of Christies), the Mark Jason Gallery works to promote fresh talent through monthly solo and group shows, as well as through having an established presence at major fairs such as Art London, The London Art Fair, AAF New York, and Battersea. The Mark Jason Gallery will be hosting its second New York group show in October 2005.
