Boxed In is a collection of assemblage art created by the emerging artist Cher Morresey. Cher has chosen to have her first solo exhibition in Forty Hall the Grade 1 listed Jacobean Hall built in 1629. Originally a painter Cher Morresey started creating assemblages in 2008. She often uses boxes as her starting point, like the grandfather of assemblage art Joseph Cornell (1903 - 1972). Cher is drawn to vintage and period pieces, which offer a nostalgic touch to an otherwise 'new' work. Inspiration can come from an autobiographical event, a song lyric or newspaper article. "Boxed In" is not only a reference to the physical nature of a box; but is also an anti-slogan, as Cher pushes back the perimeters of traditional art forms to show the viewer that assemblage can be just as beautiful or thought provoking as painting. Her work addresses equality, fertility, loss, family, semantics, unemployment, and - as a psychology graduate - many interesting psychological theories. Cher works with antique jewellery, cigar, cigarette and wine boxes and finds many of her materials on the street, beach, woods or in recycle bins or skips. Cher also uses items bought at car boot sales, jumble sales and objects given to her by friends and family.
