Confess your sins! - and have them recorded in art history

Controversial images of a ball-gagged Pope Benedict are on display at Salon Contemporary in London’s vibrant Notting Hill until 30th January 2011. These form samples of artist Helen Gorrill’s huge ‘confessional’ quilt, made up of 200 pictures of the pope along with anonymous and hidden confessions.

You can read some of these anonymous confessions at Salon Contemporary until 3rd January, and whilst there, you are invited to post your own anonymous confession in the confession box to be included in the final work. Other work on display by Helen includes a chair created from prosthetic limbs, and huge female paintings based on power and submission.

The artist says that the confessional quilt is inspired by an article she read in the paper, when the Pope had written a children’s book that ignored all Jesus’s female friends, there being nearly 200 female characters in the bible. Helen said: “Each square of the quilt will be printed with a tiny confession. The front of the quilt will feature embroidered anonymous confessions from members of the public, while the back will have the hidden and secret confessions of famous and important writers, artists, thinkers, people who have really made a difference”.
The finished piece is due to be unveiled in May 2011.

"The exhibition forms part of Salon Contemporary’s Artist of the Week Debut show, displaying the works of four fantastically gifted artists: Akleriah, Alyona Larionova, Dragana Jurisic and Helen Gorrill. The four were shortlisted from the nine winning artists of the week, all interviewed by a panel of professional judges at Salon Contemporary. Each artist is displaying a diverse and extremely high quality of work, both aesthetically and conceptually, which will promise a spectacular exhibition!"
