Cycling is one of the newest additions to the Paralympic games. Originally paralympic cycling was developed as a tandem sport for blind athletes paired with sighted partners. Today, Paralympic cycling uses both two and three wheeled bikes over a range of distances and on a variety of different terrains.
Originally, the sport of paralympic cycling was somewhat limited by the availability of suitable bikes; however, as technology has developed, so has the range of cycling events within the Paralympic games. During the last thirty years, the number of competitors has risen dramatically in both individual and team events. There are different events depending on the level of disability as well as tricycles, tandems and hand-cycles.
