Mahler Symphony no 1 (1898 version)
For our final Mahlerian celebration of 2011, we offer up a sparkling
programme that traces the development of what has been described as
the greatest First Symphony ever written.

First, we welcome stunning soprano Martha Jones for Mahler’s first
great orchestral song cycle: the ‘Songs of a Wayfarer’, which provided
two major themes for the First Symphony. This is followed by the
glorious slow movement Blumine, originally conceived for the
symphony. Finally, we present a rare chance to hear the 1898 version
of the entire symphony in all its majestic glory, as the per fect climax to a year of exceptional orchestral music-making.

This concert also takes place at another venue:

7.30pm Guildford Cathedral,
Stag Hill, GU2 7UP
