Brahms’s choral music is masterful, full of insight into his musical personality and his wide-ranging interests and influences, yet much of it remains unknown. Londinium explores the hidden world of Brahms’s choral music – including the exquisite, elusive Fünf Gesänge op.104 and the virtuosic Fest- und Gedenksprüche – alongside early music from Brahms’s personal library, by Gabrieli, Eccard and Schütz, and works by his close friend Robert Schumann and his contemporary Peter Cornelius. The concert also includes the first performance of a new work by Timothy Burke: Distanz und ein bestimmtes Licht, which was inspired by Brahms’s Fünf Gesänge and written especially for this concert.
