The Attic's inaugural exhibition explores the ability of a surface to capture or witness the passing of time, from the briefest of moments to a lifetime or longer. The exhibition features 2D and 3D works from 27 artists, each with their own interpretation. They include abstract representations of the tide, manipulations of surface and texture and studies of room, person and time.

The Attic itself features surfaces with a long history to tell. Visitors duck their heads as they walk under the beam that originally formed part of the external back wall of the building, when from 1759 it was The White Hart, serving beer through a hatch. Later-built brick walls have been plastered, papered and papered again throughout the five generations of Lines ownership. Another plastered wall reveals its wattle and daub construction. These are surfaces which have witnessed time pass and now inform the works placed upon them.
