Cabaret fans are in for a seductive treat this spring with the official commercial premiere of the new cabaret show, Happy Birthday Lola. The one-woman show marks the cabaret debut of Nia Barge, an emerging poet and performance artist from the United States. Happy Birthday Lola fuses the genres of cabaret, spoken word and interactive theatre to create a new experience that is edgy, provocative and fun. During the course of the evening, audiences will enjoy a full birthday party including cocktails, cake and music. Throughout the production, viewers will have an intimate look inside Lola, a bawdy and expressive woman who muses about her loves, losses and life.

The production is intriguing and charming, blurring the line between spectator and participant. Creator and performer Nia Barge said “I want to create a show that challenges audiences as much as it entertains them; I want them to be disturbed, yet delighted.” Running just under 90 minutes, the show is well suited for romantic dates and platonic group outings.

Originally developed for a course at Goldsmiths, University of London, Happy Birthday Lola is being presented in a full production by The WBM Group, an arts producer from New York City. Based on the high demand during its original run, The WBM Group will present the show in an international tour, kicking off at the Gopher Hole in the heart of Hoxton, East London’s trendy arts neighbourhood.
