Sourcing naturally grown, wild food is a good strategy for healthy eating and foraging for it can be very rewarding. The British countryside can yield an impressive variety of edible fruits, roots, leaves, seeds, berries, fungi and even seaweed.
Wetland habitats are home to a feast of edible plants which have fed people for centuries. Join our foraging walk around the wetlands to see which plants are perfect for a wild harvest.
We’ll be looking out for reed shoots, tree leaves and buds, and talking about the different uses of nettles. You'll hear about common edible plants, how to identify them and how they can be used. Find out some of the fascinating folklore attached to plants, from warding off evil spirits to finding your true love. While we won't be picking any of the plants (they're needed by the Centre's wildlife), you'll go away with some handy tips and ideas so that you can get started with some fun, healthy foraging.
Our foraging enthusiast Shayna has always been fascinated with finding wild food and has recently been studying edible and medicinal plant identification.
