Bruckner Symphony No 5

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Bernard Haitink conductor

Bruckner's 5th Symphony is a mighty work, not least in terms of length, but also in the demands it makes
on the conductor through its architectural ambition and spiritual depth. Bernard Haitink is, thankfully, one of the most skilled and respected of today's conductors, and his relationship with the superb Royal Concertgebouw is one of life-long affection, on both sides. Born in the orchestra's home city of Amsterdam, Haitink grew up listening to the ensemble, and for nearly three decades served as their chief conductor. A noted Bruckner interpreter - the recording he and the Concertgebouw made of this evening's symphony back in the '70s remains an acclaimed recommendation - decades of reflection on the composer's music should ensure a formidable interpretation.

'Spacious, visionary, powerfully executed and wholly enveloping...the breadth of symphonic argument was compelling.' Daily Telegraph
