Max Clendinning: Avant Craft

CHELSEA space presents Avant Craft a rare opportunity to see the painted plywood furniture of renowned architect and interior designer Max Clendinning (b.1924). Clendinning has an international reputation; past clients included Christian Dior and his designs were sold through retailers such as Liberty Co. Often compared with the Memphis design group his work has been variously described as ‘Postmodern’, ‘Pop’ and ‘Late Modern’ however, the work has all but disappeared except amongst the cognoscenti. With a renewed interest in Max Clendinning, and his work featuring in the current V& A Exhibition ‘British Design 1948-2012’, CHELSEA space has the pleasure in presenting a timely solo exhibition by one of the most original designers of his generation.
