The Gut Club

Vitrine Bermondsey Square presents The Gut Club, a one-day event including talks, screenings and performance examining our primitive relationship to the production, processing and consumption of food.

Founded by Joel Gray and Nick Simonin, The Gut Club draws on many collaborators, artists, curators, musicians, actors, gardeners, foragers and butchers who believe that food is, and always will be, at the center of human cultural practice. For the event on Bermondsey square they will be performing fresh recipes and edible offerings to the public free of charge, the food will accompany a series of talks. There will also be a series of film screenings in Shortwave cinema. Contributors include philosopher and gastrosopher Professor Harald Lemke, psychologist Dr Tiina Eilola, anthropologist Amy Godfrey-Smythe and forager Rupert Burdock.

Receiving increasing attention in the art world, The Gut Club was recently featured on BBC2 Culture Show, as well as hosting events at the Southbank’s Hayward Gallery, Focal Point and the James Taylor Gallery in London.

Joel Gray recently co-curated and exhibited in the New Primitives exhibition, ‘Mesolithic Pop’. He has created performances for Tate Modern, Tate Britain, British Museum, the ICA and Folkestone Triennial. He is currently artist in residence at Grande Disco, Portugal, and is a trained stone Mason.

Nick Simonin is co founder of Painswick Orchard Group, dedicated to reviving lost festivals; Apple day/harvest festival, wassailing, mummery and Morris. He has completed a traditional 3-year
apprenticeship in a large family owned French restaurant and is a trained stone Mason.
