L’Avare (The Miser) – by Molière

Following the success of Le Malade Imaginaire, Tour De Force Theatre is delighted to present another of Molière’s delightful plays. Written in 1668, The Miser is one of his most popular and successful comedies. It is the story of Harpagon, the meanest moneylender around, who does everything he can to protect his wealth and to ensure that even the marriage arrangements of his two children yield him yet more profit. He is convinced that everyone around him is his thief and when his savings are stolen from him, he acts as if he has lost his most treasured friend. It’s a hilarious tale of a man obsessed and of what his friends and family must do to save themselves from his meanness and paranoia.

Adapted for a cast of five, and using a highly visual theatrical language, this production sets the story in a familiar contemporary world, for it is plain to see that people like Harpagon are as common today as they were in the seventeenth century.

Despite currently being based in London, Tour De Force Theatre Company has been creating exciting and innovative productions in French for the past ten years. Following the success of “Au Revoir Les Enfants” adapted from the film by Louis Malle, the company went on to present successful stage adaptations of “Lacombe Lucien” also by Louis Malle, “L’Etranger” from the novel by Camus, “Le Petit Prince” from the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and “Monsieur Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Coran” from the book by Eric Emmanuel-Schmitt.
