Candida Lycett Green will take you on an illustrated journey visiting historic churches across England, through her eyes.
As a child Candida dreaded going on “church crawls“ with her father, John Betjeman. She and her brother used to sigh, “Not another old church,” and often refused to get out of the car. Something stuck however: later on when Candida began travelling through England by horse she found it almost impossible to pass a church she had not seen before. “You never know what you are going to find - There might be an incredible monument to some vanished family for instance, or a beautiful piece of stained glass.”
At the Churches Conservation Trust’s Annual Lecture, Candida will take us on a journey through England inspired by her love of churches, drawing from her ‘Unwrecked England’ column that she has been writing for over 20 years. Loyd Grossman Chair of CCT says “We are delighted that Candida will share with us her insightful and entertaining memories of a lifetime's love of English parish churches.”
Candida Lycett Green is the daughter of the late Sir John Betjeman and author of seventeen books, including the bestselling English Cottages, The Dangerous Edge of Things and Over the Hills and Far Away.
