Three Gods are on a journey to find out if there are any good people left on earth. In Szechuan, a modern hub of greed and poverty, only the good soul Shen Te will offer them shelter. As soon as they give her financial support everybody needs her help. Her livelihood in danger and her heart tied to a thief, her only hope resides in her hardhearted cousin, Shui Ta.

Brecht's masterpiece asks us a simple question: how can goodness survive in a world of extreme poverty and cruelty? Is it still possible to be kind? In our modern age of avarice, consumerism and economic anxiety no play is timelier or more relevant than Bertolt Brecht's 'The Good Soul of Szechuan'. Set against the backdrop of modern China this new production, in a translation by David Harrower, is a thrilling, radical reinterpretation of a great classic.
