The first event of the 2013 Bengal to Bethnal Green series, directed by Yousuf Ali Khan, will showcase the Best of Bengali Culture flourishing in London’s East End today, commemorating the major Bengali celebration Language Day, and will take place at East London’s vibrant Arts Centre, Rich Mix, in the heart of Bethnal Green.

A music workshop for families will begin the event at 2.30pm, with a presentation on Language Day, (4 pm), and a concert featuring renowned Bengali singer Akash Sultan, (4.20 pm), to follow.

Musicians will include Sunil Jadahav (keyboard), and Louise Elliott (flute, tenor saxophone) Claude Deppa (trumpet, African drums) and Gerry Hunt (guitar), all internationally renowned world and jazz musicians from the Grand Union Orchestra, not forgetting tabla maestro Yousuf Ali Khan himself! The music is based on Bengali songs, both in traditional form and combined with contemporary styles reflecting the wide variety of music in London’s East End today.
