London Philharmonic Orchestra Foyle Future Firsts and Guests

Youth is the theme of this concert by the young musicians of the Foyle Future Firsts programme. Mozart's first Quintet dates from shortly before his 18th birthday, but already reveals his mature fluency of invention and mastery of colour. The Sextet by John Ireland was written in 1898 when the composer was a teenage student at the Royal College of Music, though it was suppressed for many years until its triumphant revival towards the end of his life. Brahms's Second Sextet, composed in his thirties, embodies memories of a failed youthful love affair, especially in the passionate opening movement with its coded references to the beloved's name.
