About Almeida
The Almeida Theatre is located in Almeida Street in Islington. Founded by the successful actors and directors Ian McDairmid and Jonathan Kent. The Almeida has grown a fine reputation as one of London's best fringe theatres. Actors such as Kevin Spacey and Cate Blanchett have performed at the Almeida. The Almeida performs many of its own productions, several of which has moved successfully to the West End. In 1999 the Almeida underwent a £1.5 million renovation. This included rebuilding the foyer, increasing seating numbers and providing easier access and better facilities for both visitors and staff. The main auditorium now has much improved ventilation and an infra red assisted hearing system. As well as producing plays, the Almeida Theatre also stages Operas and annually a dance festival is held here. The Almeida Bar is open from 11:30am until 11pm Monday to Friday providing drinks and light meals for visitors. The Almeida Theatre employs a dedicated staff of 40 individuals. The Theatre is easily access from Highbury or Angel Underground stations. The theatres recent refurbishment has meant that the venue has excellent disabled access and facilities. Though a relatively young venue, the ambitious Almeida Theatre has future plans for expansion and a continuing energy to bring new works and talent to London's theatre-goers.
