All In London Review
Hearty British grub
As we peruse the menu a friendly waitress recommends the Cahors "Malbec", Cedre Heritage 2009, a young-tasting red which we glug down to our heart’s content, with even more relish when we learn that all the wines are sourced from independent producers and great care goes into the selection process.
Similar effort goes into the menu; the food hails from local producers, and every dish is made freshly on the premises. Herby, mushy potted Morecambe Bay shrimps spread easily over toast; a rich ham and mushroom tart is smothered in melted Cheddar cheese. The juicy Banockburn rib steak comes with heaps of a creamy wholegrain mustard sauce, the grilled Portobello mushroom and tomato offering temporary distractions from the tender meat – this is filling winter food at its best - but it’s the roast duck breast that initially perturbs us with its caramelised pear tasting of vanilla and cinnamon, only to turn out to be an excellent marriage. We round off the meal with a nostalgic apple pie with cinnamon ice cream and a velvety, lemony buttermilk panacotta, the addition of bittersweet rhubarb refreshing the palate.
Streatham just got a little cosier. A three course meal for two with wine is roughly £85.
