The Atheist Buses

As an atheist I find it very sad that the bus ads say "there is
probably no god". That's like Christians saying "there probably was a
bloke called Jesus". Atheists should have the courage to state the
facts.

The ads should say "Of course there's no god, now stop worrying and
get on with your life".

I'm sure "probably" came in to placate the advertising standards
authority. But if they really do have a problem with this then simply
make it a quote. I'm more than happy to provide it, as no doubt are
thousands of scientists worldwide.

Why is it that religions are allowed to make unproven and unprovable
claims with impunity, but atheists have their words censored?

Because you can neither prove nor disprove the existence of a higher being?

I heard about this on the news last night. It's an interesting issue.

Does anyone know who's behind this campaign?

I'd guess the reason they said "probably" is because without it it's a very antagonistic statement to all religions. And we all know what can happen when very religious people get angry!

Well who says they were being censored? Perhaps they also chose the words to balance out a humourous ad rather than something negative?

And I dont see religions forcing anything down my throat. I dont regularly see ads telling me to believe in God or else.

But more than likely simply because Athiests couldnt care less, whereas there will always be some uptight religious believer who wants to complain?

They chose the word probably to avoid censure by the ASA.

You can see this on their web site...

As with the famous Carlsberg ads (‘probably the best lager in the world’), ‘probably’ helps to ensure that our ads will not breach any advertising codes Committee of Advertising Practice advised the campaign that “the inclusion of the word ‘probably’ makes it less likely to cause offence, and therefore be in breach of the Advertising Code.”

Your eyes are closed!

You dont see religions forcing anything down your throat? Where were you on July 7th 2005? Or on September 11th 2001? You are an infidel and these muslims want to kill or convert you.

And Christians aren't much better. What about the Pope preaching that being gay is bad in his Christmas sermon?

Oh, and The Christian ads to which the Atheist Bus Campaign is a response linked to a website that promised non-Christians and eternity of torment in a lake of fire.

Pretty worrying.

Has this ad been running for a while cos i'm sure this was one of the topics on the vanessa feltz radio show a while ago :confused2:
I remember they spoke to the people behind it & they gave a reason for why they used the word probably..... but i can't remember.

I am a catholic.... i don't shove my views on anyone though.
My husband doesn't believe in god or anything but he does take the kids to church when im ill or can't go.

If people believe in god like i do then great.... if people don't then great.... i don't care what people think or don't think about my religion.

Quite simply I can choose to ignore them all.

And I would point out that 01 and 05 have links far deeper than religious war, politics plays a rather large part in it all.
