This retro menu featured of some stunning mains including Aegean Glazed Lamb Fillet served with Mustard Beans, Sicilian Couscous and Tzatziki and Seared Pork Loin with Parma Ham, Red Cabbage, Grilled Apples and Mustard Dressing. Then for dessert, delve into Randall & Aubin’s tantalizing, Pot au Chocolate. Over the years, the venue has become renowned for serving excellent seafood, as well as an impressive array of classic French and British dishes. All In London Review

Soak up the Soho atmosphere at this smart restaurant/bar

This smart champagne and oyster bar was once a butcher’s; it now attracts trendy Soho-ites who like to relax here with a champagne cocktail after work, as well as seafood-loving foodies.

Chef Ed Baines has appeared in numerous TV shows, amongst them Britain’s Best Dish, Ready Steady Cook, and Ed Baines Entertains, which was in fact filmed here. Having trained at the famous River Café, Baines always showed a predilection for Mediterranean food, which shows in the mostly French-inspired menu at Randal & Aubin.

Having opened in 1996, the restaurant has preserved much of the original décor of the butcher’s. The original white tiling remains, as well as a fish and seafood counter where the meat was once on display. Seating is on high stools, and a large window allows for people watching along Brewer Street. It’s impossibly charming, and even the waiting staff are impossibly pretty.

We ponder over the wine list before choosing a Castalao Shiraz Rose, which is described by the menu as scrumptious, ripe, and fragrant. It’s fruity and refreshing, and inexpensive at £4.40 a glass.

The menu has a strong emphasis on fish. Lobster salad, halibut with white beans and chorizo, and grilled tuna with feta and tapenade, and of course, a variety of oysters are some of the offerings. It’s not all fruits de mer though, meat eaters can choose roasted salt beef, veal or pork belly.

Grilled Queen Scallops are served in pretty little shells, and drizzled with a lemon and garlic butter sauce with capers (£8.50). They are tender to the bite, although the flavour of the dressing is so subtle it’s barely perceptible.

The salmon Gravadlax with toasted muesli bread comes with a dill and mustard dressing (£8.75), which resembles Thousand Island dressing in both colour and taste. It is tasty nonetheless, and the thin slithers of salmon appear to have a herby rind of some sort.

The baked vanilla cheesecake with sultanas (£4) is more cake-ey in consistency than normal cheesecake, eschewing the traditional biscuit base.

Food at Randall & Aubin is a tad on the expensive side, and its layout and location make it more of a drinking and snacking spot than a place for a full-on sit down meal. A good place to start a night out, or take in a few drinks and the Soho atmosphere.

There's nothing fishy about these restaurants...

This smart, buzzy restaurant was once a butcher’s shop. Much of the original décor remains, along with a counter for fish and seafood where the meat was once on display. Chef Ed Baines, famed for TV shows Ready Steady Cook and Britain’s Best Dish, serves popular seafood and fish dishes like salmon gravadlax, crab cakes and breaded lemon sole.

We chose the Plats de Fruits de Mer here and we weren't disappointed. You get a heap of food: oysters, prawns, scallops, clams, mussels, cockles, clams (I don't think I've missed anything) and it was delicious! ... all washed down with a chilled bottle of vino.

It's not cheap though (about £90 for the two of us plus drinks).
