Following Ravilious at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, exhibition curator and author James Russell explores the life and work of Eric Ravilious, a playful, enigmatic artist.
Eric Ravilious was 39 when he died on service as a war artist in 1942, yet he had already achieved amazing things. He is best known for his haunting watercolours in which lighthouses, white horses, empty rooms and downland paths become marvels. James Russell has explored many of these paintings in depth, teasing out stories and characters.
Ravilious was described by reviewers as ‘Delightful and haunting’ (The Sunday Times) and ‘Exhilarating, enthralling and outstandingly beautiful’ (The Observer). Pictures were also displayed in the Queen’s House last year.
