London's best juice bars

5-a-day? If it tastes this good, we'll manage 30-a-day

Damn eating. It's all so inconvenient and time-consuming. Well, lucky for us all, you can squish all those vitamins and minerals essential for life into one handy, portable, slurpable-on-the-go juice.

And best of all, they're completely delicious.

As well as fruit and vegetable juices you can also blend in seeds, nuts, greens and more... it's basically a meal with a straw.

Here are our favourite juice spots in London...

In the land of yummy mummies, yoga-fanatics and Sadie Frost it’s hardly surprising to find a juice bar. This green-fronted shop in Primrose Hill is also a florist and a greengrocer’s. Choose one of the smoothies or juices from the blackboard or make up your own from whatever produce is available.

Most juice bars rave about their cold pressing methods, which retain more nutrients than other processes by pressing fruit and veg without creating heat or letting air in. At Roots & Bulbs they are twice cold pressed, which either means double the goodness or is just supposed to sound more impressive than your bog-standard single pressed juice. They also do breakfasts, salads and wraps.

The juice bar trend is a relatively new one to the capital, but Joe & The Juice started plying their trade on the King’s Road when spirulina shots were a meregreen-tinted twinkle on the horizon. The company was founded in Denmark in 2002 aiming to be “a new Starbucks” and they now have dozens of stores throughout Europe, five of which are in London. As well as juices, coffees and rye bread sandwiches you can get ginger lattes, with fresh ginger root grated into your coffee.

The ‘pharmacy shots’ at Juice Tonic have things like activated charcoal, chlorella, hydrosol and shilajit. While we have no idea what these do they sound pretty scientific, so they must be good for you, right?

Lovage image

Producing healthy juices is no simple business, in fact juicers will tell you it’s an artform not dissimilar to brewing the perfect coffee. The super-cool Ace Hotel in Shoreditch is home to Lovage, where in their teensy kitchen ingredients are ground to a pulp, carefully wrapped in cloth and then heavily squeezed with a press to pack as much juiced produce into each drink as possible. And all before 7 am, ready for East London’s creatives to grab their morning restorative.

The man behind E&O and La Bodega Negra is also the co-founder of this Soho juice bar, where juices are tailored to specific needs. Is your liver in need of a cleanse? Try the Detox Booster with apple, lemon, ginger and cayenne pepper. Want to strengthen your bones? The celery, spinach and carrot in the Easy Green will give you the necessary Vitamins A and K. Need to appease an over-eager appetite? Get the Hunger Buster, and if that doesn’t work there’s a range of Asian-inspired low-calorie snacks available too.

Like 99.9% of all health trends, juicing first caught on in LA where this bar has its origins. From the snappily-named Greenhouse 1, 2, 3, etc, made from the combination of various greens, to Alkaline Cleanse Water and the even more appealing-sounding Chlorophyll Nutrient Water, this is a pilates-lover’s dream. Visit the Ham Yard Hotel branch for extra fashion kudos.

Lab Organic image

58 Neal Street WC2H 9PA

Lab Organic’s gleaming white interior may remind one of a laboratory, but despite the clinical look this is the cosiest juice bar we’ve come across. It’s an ideal place for people watching thanks to the window seats overlooking Neal’s Yard, and they have a 360 degree approach to healthy living with recyclable packaging, a low carbon footprint and a programme of seminars and community-building classes.

Neal’s Yard is something of a haven for the health-conscious, with homeopathic store Neal’s Yard Remedies, raw vegan eatery Wild Food Café and Blend & Press, serving up smoothies, hot drinks and shakes. They also do booster shots, which are not vaccines but small doses of super-healthy ingredients like the Rejuvenation, made with coconut water and aloe vera. Dieticians say these are great for a quick energy spike, so you can replace all attempts at exercise and healthy eating with these 60 ml shots (ha! Not really).

Peckham has officially completed its transition to fully-fledged hipsterville. Among its new trendy outlets is this juice bar/market stalllocated under a railway arch on Rye Lane, where nutrient-rich drinks like spiced pumpkin, carrot and maple are also delicious – there’s no downing wheatgrass shots while holding your nose here.
