A CITY STAYCATION AT CANOPY LONDON CITY

Love London

We love hearing of new London hotel openings, but even more so when they’re so perfectly positioned to enjoy a lazy lie in before rolling into the office because it’s a mere five minutes away. That’s the joy of a London staycation, a cheeky midweek mini break that can allow you an escape from the everyday and a post-supper sleepover without the schlep home after a late night.

When offered a visit to the new Canopy by Hilton at Aldgate we obviously jumped at the chance. It’s just around the corner from the tube, perfectly positioned between Tower Bridge and Liverpool Street to make it convenient for both conviviality and commuting. With 340 rooms it’s far from boutique, yet manages to maintain the cosy elegance of a hotel half its size, while the glistening views of the Gherkin shimmering in the sunlight remind you where you are, eight in the heart of the city.

It’s the first Canopy by Hilton in the UK and offers guests a rooftop bar, restaurant, fitness studio, private dining and open-plan café on the ground floor. Designed in collaboration with UK based architects and interior design company ACME, the hotel opened back in September. Thirty five top floor suites have some pretty epic views of the city - as long as access to the rooftop bar - but even the standard King Rooms are worthy of a mention. With contemporary decor, very comfy beds, and pretty chic bathrooms, each room is a cosy little home from home, plus guests receive a cute little welcome gift on arrival inspired by the City of London - a reminder that while this might be a big global hotel chain, it’s still got a neighbourhood feel to it.

The main restaurant, Penny Squares, offers an East End inspired menu using local, sustainable ingredients, while rooftop bar Florattica, sure to attract the crowds when it opens later this summer, and seems it may make refreshing change from the often rather city esque bars of the area…if you know what I mean. With a premium artisan breakfast and weekend tapas brunch on the menu, we’re definitely looking forward to visiting this one when it opens its doors.

For access to the city and the sights of London’s the new Canopy London City really can’t be beaten. The location is unrivalled, the food is great and they have managed to really capture the essence of the local area and keep a great vibe, despite it being a huge hotel from a big global brand name.

Rooms from around £175, book online at www.hilton.com
