This south London park was once a private estate that’s had some illustrious owners, among them Edward Whitchurch, one of the first producers of the Bible in English. In the 19th century the park was an industrial estate that produced snuff; the two snuff mills still stand to this day. Now managed by the National Trust, it’s an important conservation area and is home to many birds, squirrels and insects, along with many trees and plants. But aside from its wildlife and flora there are other attractions. The old horse stables now house a second hand bookshop, the profits of which go into maintaining the park. The courtyard has a café for alfresco snacking, and lunches are served in the Potting Shed café, with vegetables sourced from the gardens themselves. There are also several workshops for crafts workers which are open to the public, and there is a shop selling their items as well as preserves and gifts.
