Tyburn Convent on the edges of Hyde Park is home to the Tyburn nuns, who practice perpetual adoration. What this means is that there is always one member of the convent praying in the monstrance; when a gong sounds she is replaced by another nun, and this continues round the clock.

Founded in 1901 by Marie Adele Garnier from France, the convent is located very near the site of the Tyburn Gallows, where criminals were executed once upon a time. The crypt contains remains of some of the Catholic Martyrs who died here, and guided tours of the Shrine of the Martyrs take place daily. If you want to find out more about the Tyburn nuns there is an open afternoon on the first Sunday of the month, when their history and practices are explained.

Guided tours run daily and offer the best way to achieve a true reflection of what life is like in this most holy of places. The fact that this area was once home to the famous ‘Tyburn Tree’ gallows makes it even more eerily calm and atmospheric inside the convent – not to mention the fact that there is a shrine on the bottom floor to the many martyred Catholics of the 16th and 17th centuries.
