The Waterworks Nature Reserve was once home to the East London Waterworks Company, who made it possible for clean drinking water to be provided to the nearby boroughs. Now 150 years old, the site is home to over 500 species of plants and 25 types of birds. A quarter of all British butterflies are said to have been recorded here. Visitors may want to take one of the recommended trails to discover the butterflies or birds in the area. Regular bird watching events and group walks are also organized from here.

The nature reserve also an 18 hole golf course for enthusiasts. There is a café and shop on the premises as well as rooms that may be hired for children’s birthday parties. Opening times for the golf course are Monday to Friday 9 – 5 and Saturday and Sunday 8 – 5.
