As with most of London’s parks, Abney Park was once private land, in this case part of an estate owned by non-conformist hymn writer Isaac Watts in the 19th century. As a result the park became a cemetery for people of all religions, however in the 1970s the company managing the cemetery went into administration, and the previously well-kept garden grew wild. In the 1980s Hackney Council took over, and today a trust takes care of maintaining the park’s ecosystem, which includes tawny owls, woodpeckers, and around 200 impressive old trees. There are some notable people buried here, among them the founder of the Salvation Army, William Booth, and the daughter of Britain’s first black activist, Joanna Vassa, whose grave is listed by English Heritage.
