As its name suggests, this museum in the middle of Wimbledon Common is dedicated to windmills. Illustrations and footage showing how flour was produced demonstrate how important these constructions were to the food chain, as well as the differences in being powered by water or air.The Model Room has a collection of model windmills from their earliest incarnations to present day wind turbines, and another display has a selection of tools found at a Norfolk mill that date back to the 15th century.
The youngest members of the family can have a go at milling flour the old fashioned way on a mock windmill; additionally the history of the local Scouts is explained here, as the ground floor was used as accommodation by the Wimbledon Common Rangers until 1999. Before you leave, don’t forget to check out the traditional farming machinery outside.
