Likened to a 'gorgeous little jewel box', The Rivoli Bar is an intimate cocktail lounge secluded from bustling Piccadilly, which is located immediately outside but feels a world away. The Rivoli Bar is overtly Art Deco in its design, a sophisticated symphony of camphor wood walls inset with illuminated Lalique glass panels, patterned mirrors, decorative bas relief, and an under lit bar topped with polished cocktail shakers, all overarched with brilliant gilded ceiling domes.

The bartenders of The Rivoli Bar are experts in the craft of the cocktail; utilizing premium spirits, homemade cordials and bitters, bespoke glassware, uniquely shaped ice and seemingly boundless imagination to create new concoctions or reinterpret old classics. New creations include The Talullah (named after the actress Tallulah Bankhead): Soshu Japanese spirit, jasmine pearl tea, Cinzano Bianco, geranium essence and Piper Heidsieck champagne served in a Christian Louboutin shoe.

Impeccable cocktails and old school glamour in the heart of The Ritz

Dress sharp or risk being turfed out, that’s the thing to remember when making plans for a trip to the Ritz’s Rivoli Bar. Like the rest of the grand hotel, there is a code of dress applied here, which means no trainers, only the smartest of denim and jackets on men at all times. If you can navigate those simple instructions put in place to keep this bastion of class swagger in check despite the general decline of sartorial standards, then friends, you can make a date at the Rivoli Bar

Unless you’re a hedge fund manger, oil trader or some other obscene money making mogul, the Rivoli Bar will be a special occasion for you. Cocktails – and you have to drink cocktails here – are around £20 a time so the bill adds up quicker than you can say ‘puttin’ on the Ritz’.

Glowing golds and yellows drape the bar in a honeyed tint that sucks you in and makes you want to stay for good. The interior is infectious enough for you to forget about money momentarily and order away (once or twice at least). We visited at Christmas and strolling past the lobby’s gigantic tree and into the grand Rivoli lounge whet the appetite for that golden age glamour that the bar exudes.

The Rivoli 10 was our drink of choice, a mix of whisky, ginger liquor, vermouth and orange bitters that offered up a sort of complicated Old Fashioned. The list of Ritz cocktails is worth sticking to but you can always order off menu. And if you do happen to be one of those hedge fund types then you could do worse than dropping £90 on a vintage Negroni – an aged mixture of 1950’s Gordon’s, 1950’s Campari and 1950s Martini Rossi Red Vermouth.

The Ritz may appear slightly dated but that’s its charm. Touches like the dress code and nibbles, those well-made, delicate drinks and the ostentatious glamour of it are all an excuse just to visit the establishment that is, The Ritz.
