Railroad is a café/bar, mostly. But we also have a small bookshop, and arts events in the basement. We are open for breakfast and lunch every day except Tuesday (when we are closed), and from Wednesday to Saturday nights we are open in the evening- cooking dinner.

it’s an intriguing addition to the area

There’s something about Hackney and new cafes opening up right now, or maybe it’s just turning one’s attention from the evening towards the day. Whatever it is, Railroad is one such place that’s cropped up amongst the regeneration of Morning Lane to spread a little cheer around Hackney Central with its chic typography in a setting that takes a DIY approach to its style. A cafe, bar and restaurant you can take your pick and leave the rest. A little afternoon twee (see what I did there) is delightful, although forget that sublime piece of wit, because it actually boasts more about its coffee. Square Mile beans are fed through the vintage machine to provide some of the best coffee around in an area that’s gathering purveyors of fine flat whites as quick as Tesco Metros.

The food follows no real set menu thanks to the emphasis on fresh and local produce so one day you’ll find a brunch of Moroccan eggs, carefully sculpted in the tiny kitchen to represent much more than a glorified breakfast, or if it’s lunch you’re looking for then you could do worse than the Vietnamese sandwich stuffed with spicy pork and pickled vegetables. Alcohol is served with a short wine list propping up the collection of a few world beers. Following dinner there’s always the chance to pop below deck to the resident live space if you’re attendance coincides with a spoken word piece or some live music.

There’s clearly a lot more to come from Railroad but already it’s an intriguing addition to the area.
