All In London Review

Easily one of south London's best spots for rare beers

Review Image
If the Bermondsey Beer Mile is all a bit too brewery-specific for you then U-Brew’s Bottle Shop might be the answer. Located in one of the arches on Old Jamaica Road, the double-decker space is home to one of the best selections of artisan and unusual beer in London. If you thought Meantime and Camden Brewery were niche brews then a visit here is going to blow your beer-soaked mind.

Given that the venue is snugly tucked into an industrial looking arch, the place is surprisingly cosy. Each of the two floors is stocked with a bar and fridges and surrounded by neat rows of beer benches. Beyond the benches and the beers there’s not much to look at but you get the sense that that is the idea. There is nothing here to divert your senses from the job in hand, sampling small batch beers.

When we visit Bottle Shop there is a range of Mikkeller beers on draught along with a selection from Magic Rock. The choice from the bottle fridge includes Burning Sky and Brew by Numbers to support a long list of labels we’ve never seen before. As is the case with the London beer game, the staff are happy to offer suggestions, which is just as well given the choice on offer. Although the U-Brew Bottle Shop is now firmly established as a stop on the Beer Mile (it currently only opens on 11am-7pm on Saturdays) it is well worth a direct visit if you want to avoid the queues at the other breweries. It may not quite be brewery fresh but with a vast range of beers from all over the world to choose from it has its benefits.
