All In London Review

If it were a car it would be an old Saab 900 Turbo with furry dice hanging from the mirror

As if Londoners with enough capital to invest in bricks and mortar needed any more reason to move to Stoke Newington, there’s the Londesborough. Located on a residential side street a short walk down from Stoke Newington Town Hall, it employs an evening opening policy, except on weekends.

Spacious, bright and with more than a touch of design chops about it, the Londesborough is all class. If it were a car it would be an old Saab 900 Turbo with furry dice hanging from the mirror. If it were a sandwich it would be ham, cheese and pickle. If it were a Premiership football team, it would be Fulham FC. See what we did there, all simple class, nothing not to like.

Inside, there is more than enough space to accommodate a variety of large tables, which split to create dancing room on Friday nights, as well as standing room around the curved bar. Framed posters cover the walls and if the print of Stewy the Fox isn’t hip enough for you then take a look at the unique wall-mounted cabinets. Here is the Londesborough’s furry dice; these decorative cabinets are filled with customized beer cans and other coloruful objects that contribute to this pub’s undoubted hesh.

Food and drink are relatively restrained for this area. It may not quite be Dalston but the craft beer craze and US food thing have been passed over for sensible, lasting quality. Leffe on draught, a selection of guest ales and a long wine list do just fine for the drinks. The food sticks to a gastro theme and inspires much more interest. Grilled tiger prawns with paprika and garlic, Somerset cider fish stew and grilled rib eye all sound excellent. However, on this particular Sunday (where roasts take over the menu) it is all about the pork belly. A long, chunky, bone-in strip of pork belly is excellent and even the hungriest would find finishing this meal a challenge. Served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and mixed greens, this has to be one of the best pub roasts in London. Clearly we’re not the first to have noticed this because Sundays are strictly bookings only if you want to be sure of a table.

The Londesborough has an effortless manner that creates an enjoyably relaxed atmosphere and the Sunday roast is well worth making the journey into Stoke Newington.
