What is with women holding handbags in their elbows?

Can someone please explain to me why women, rather than holding a bag in the traditional manner using the handles, are now hooking them over their elbows and walking along looking like they're about to fist someone? It is very bizarre.

I think i'm too out of it to know the real reason...maybe it's a fashion thing. I guess it could also be more handbag snatcher-proof??

Have you seen the size of some of those handbags?
They are huge.

All the celebs carry their bags like that...... no idea why though.

I don't think it's a recent thing. It looks uncomfortable to me, but guess partly it's to deter snatchers.

I only do that when I'm holding things in my hands. The bag usually slips off my shoulder and I can't be bothered to keep putting it back. But a lot of women carry their handbags like that anyway. I agree it looks a bit stupid.

Ditto all of the above. It was very trendy in the 40's and 50's but they had less to carry in them then.
Sometimes I end up with all but the kitchen sink in mine !

well i carry a handbag because i have my purse phone and make up in and put it on my elbow because its easier to use my hands!!!! common sense really im not copying "celebs" its just convenience?!
