Peckham's original and best arch bar

Before Peckham became ‘a thing’ Bar Story was something of a lone wolf, doing it solo from its home beneath the arch of Peckham Rye Overground. Nowadays it’s not so much. Now it is the grand dame of Peckham nightlife, an old timer with – like its name suggests – many a story to tell. Like the one about when it was the only bar around these parts… you get the picture.

If you’ve been to Peckham on a night out in the last five or ten years then the chances are that you’ve encountered Bar Story. If not, here’s what it’s like and why it’s still one of the best places in Peckham. Located in a large railway arch, the interior is all about industrial simplicity. There are a few rows of tables, a long bar against one wall and a giant stack of speakers at one end of the space. It is always busy from Wednesday night onwards, it is always loud and because of those first two points, it is always fun.

Opening out on both sides of the arch, Bar Story is just as much about its front and back yards. In winter you might find a dustbin drum fire surrounded by makeshift wooden seats (imagine a slightly more gentrified Escape from New York type of scene) on one side, while summer is about loitering about the back entrance and enjoying the two-for-one happy hour cocktails (6-7pm daily).

As if things couldn’t get any better at Bar Story, its also serves stone baked pizzas, which are both delicious and excellent value at about £7 each. The only drawback for this super-popular Peckham bar is that it closes too early. Only open until 11pm at weekends (and 10pm Monday to Thursday) it has a habit of leaving you wanting more.

Located in an arch below Peckham Rye Station, Bar Story is another unusual south London venue. Lively, friendly and industrial, the bar is popular for its cheap cocktails (2 for £7 from 6pm – 7pm daily) and local appeal. The sometime BBQ in the yard at the front is another reward for discovering this hard to find bar.
